…every time the phone rings…

So my Mini’s in the shop (again) for the finishing touches. But my cell rang today around 1pm and the “Mostly Minis” name came up in the call display. Know what that means? It means a little hand is about to reach into my pocket and take out some money.

So apparently, when the Gearbox came out, Martin discovered that my car apparently needs MORE WORK! What a surprise. The head needs to be redone and it needs new guides and i have to resurface the cam (not the North Shore one) and add eight new lifters and a “roller rocker”. Out of all of the items on my list of needed bits, I understand the uses and function of exactly NONE of them. The “roller rocker”, I imagine, does some degree of rolling and rocking, but I cannot tell you which of the two it does more.

Honestly, Martin might as well say “yeah, your gonna need a new duck; I can throw in a used mallard or something, but that’s gonna cost you at least two hundred bucks”. and you know what? I’d just nod and go “uh huh”.

I actually bought one of those shop manuals thinking “you know, how hard can it be. It’s just giant lego. It’s bits that bolt together. I can figure this out. That idea lasted about three pages.

The funny thing is, whenever I hang up from these calls (and there have been many) I say “thanks, Martin!”. Like he’s doing me this great service. Perhaps he is. Perhaps my Cam is in great shape. Perhaps it’s about to expode. I dunno. Sometimes he keeps the box of busted parts so I can see how grimy and yucky they are, but that doesn’t tell me much either. Ah well, what can you do. We’re still under 10 grand for this thing, which is what a semi-decent used car will cost, so what the hell.

Photos next week? Christ, I hope so.

Dude, that was one of the best written updates you’ve done in a while. Thanks for making me laugh this Saturday morning and I can’t wait to take a ride in the “classic”… it’s gonna be worth all this hassle.

The funny thing is that I am getting resurfaced.
